Garden Manager

Living Tree Alliance (LTA) is a farming, residential, and educational community located on 93 acres in the Mad River Valley. The property includes a co-housing community, pastures for grazing and farming, access to the Mad River, a sugar bush, forests, and a hiking and mountain biking system of trails that connect to the local school and community.

The Garden Manager is responsible for maintaining, improving, and growing Living Tree’s vegetable and fruit operations. Working in partnership with the LTA Farm Circle and educational staff, the manager ensures the farm serves as a beautiful, productive, and safe outdoor classroom for all ages. This role includes researching new sustainable revenue streams.

Primary responsibilities & tasks

Garden operations

  • Coordinate all garden tasks, including planning, infrastructure maintenance, soil preparation, planting, pest management, and harvesting 

  • Oversee perennial care, including pruning and mulching

Community engagement 

  • Facilitate and support volunteers, garden mentors, apprentices, and retreat participants 

  • Create timelines and communicate priorities for collective garden workdays

Education/communication 

  • Create visual tools to communicate farm layouts, crops, and tasks

Administrative 

  • Manage the garden budget, document crop performance, and maintain a detailed garden binder 

  • Collate an end-of-season garden report detailing successes, challenges, and recommendations for the following year

Seasonal timeline

  • Early season (March–April): Perennial maintenance, seedling operation (greenhouse), and spring planting; 5 hours/week 

  • Summer season (May–September): Oversight of all garden tasks, community harvest support, and volunteer coordination; 20 hours/week 

  • Late season (October): Garden winterization, garlic planting, greenhouse winter greens and perennial prep for the following year; 10 hours/week 

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years experience in regenerative agriculture and food production

  • 2–4 years experience working with youth, volunteers, or educational farm settings

  • Knowledge of both annual and perennial crops

  • Interest in no-till and regenerative agriculture gardening techniques 

  • Previous experience in farm management or directing educational farm programs

  • Understanding of LTA’s specific goals and community dynamics.

Contract details

  • Duration: 7-month contract (mid-April through October); timeline flexible according to availability and expertise 

  • Hours: Part-time, average of 15 hours per week (flexible, including some Sundays and evenings)

  • Compensation: $8,500
